Key Takeaways

  • Drilling into acrylic sheets can be done without cracking if you follow the right techniques.
  • Choosing the correct drill bit and using proper drilling techniques are crucial.
  • Preparing the acrylic sheet and taking your time are essential for achieving a clean finish.
  • Consider the purpose of the acrylic sheet, whether it’s for greenhouse perspex, garden shed Glass, kitchen backsplash, or shower wall.
  • Acquiring acrylic sheets cut to size ensures a precise fit for your project.

Tips for drilling acrylic sheets with precision

When it comes to working with acrylic sheets, precision is key. Whether you are looking to drill a hole for greenhouse perspex, garden shed glass, a kitchen backsplash, or a shower wall, following the right techniques and using the correct tools will ensure a successful outcome. In this section, we will provide you with essential tips and techniques for drilling acrylic sheets with precision, as well as guidance on getting acrylic sheets cut to size.

Choosing the right drill bit

One of the most crucial aspects of drilling acrylic sheets is selecting the appropriate drill bit. For clean and precise cuts, we recommend using a drill bit specifically designed for acrylic materials. These drill bits typically have a sharp and pointed tip, allowing for smoother penetration into the sheet without causing cracks or splintering.

Using proper drilling techniques

Acrylic sheets are prone to cracking if not drilled properly. To avoid this, it is important to use the correct drilling techniques. Here are a few tips:

  • Start with a slow drilling speed to prevent heat buildup, which can lead to melting or cracking of the acrylic.
  • Apply steady and even pressure while drilling, allowing the drill bit to cut through the acrylic gradually.
  • Use a backup material, such as a piece of plywood, underneath the acrylic sheet to reduce vibrations and prevent chipping.

Properly preparing the acrylic sheet

Before drilling, it is essential to prepare the acrylic sheet to minimize the risk of cracking. Follow these steps:

  1. Secure the acrylic sheet firmly in place using clamps or a vice to prevent movement during drilling.
  2. Mark the desired location for the hole using a pencil or masking tape, ensuring accurate placement.
  3. Apply masking tape over the drilling area to create a protective barrier and reduce the chances of chipping.

Remember, when handling acrylic sheets, always wear safety goggles and work in a well-ventilated area to protect yourself from any potential hazards.

Now that we have covered the tips and techniques for drilling acrylic sheets with precision, let’s move on to discussing different applications for acrylic sheets, including greenhouse perspex, garden shed glass, kitchen backsplashes, shower walls, and how to get acrylic sheets cut to size.

Why Plastic Mirrors Are Better Than Acrylic Mirrors

Our Acrylic mirrors can be cut to the exact size or shape you need here at The Plastic People.

Glass is not the only option we offer. This is because they are shatterproof, mark-resistant, and 17x stronger than glass. Consequently, they are popular in outdoor areas, public spaces, and dance studios, gyms, and gardens.

Order mirrors over one meter in 5mm thickness. Acrylic is flexible, which can cause reflection distortions. By using 5mm thickness for more oversized mirrors, this can be reduced.

Home or garden acrylic mirrors cut to size.
Mirrors cut to size can create the illusion of a more extensive, lighter garden or add a decorative touch.

You can also use them indoors. As mentioned above, they are also common in fitness studios and can be used in playrooms as child-safe mirrors.

In stables, you can install an acrylic mirror cut to size.

Mirrors for horses are a safe alternative to glass and still provide comfort and companionship for the animals.

Mirrors made from acrylic: how to install them

Our acrylic mirror adhesive can be successfully used without adversely affecting the mirrored acrylic when bonding Mirrored Acrylic to wood, brick, plaster, and other wall substrates. This adhesive is for indoor use only. If you intend to place the mirror outside, please contact us for details of a suitable adhesive.

Additionally, you can drill large holes into your acrylic mirror and fasten it to the wall with screws. To ensure that your mirror is securely mounted, we recommend drilling screw holes approximately 300mm around the material.

The acrylic mirror must be fitted to a flat surface for a perfect finish since its flexibility is greater than that of glass. It is best to mount it to something rigid such as three-quarter-inch plywood before mounting it to a wall that is not flat or uncertain.

Acrylic mirror cleaning

Maintaining a clean and shiny mirror is very easy – although there are a few things to remember.

Avoid cleaning acrylic with solvents. It’s better to stick with a soft cotton cloth and warm water than to use chemical cleaners, which can damage the surface of the plastic.

Black Perspex Sheet

Acrylic sheets have a surface impact resistance nearly ten times higher than glass, providing a higher level of protection against common hazards like footballs and Wii remotes.

Black Perspex Sheet | Acrylic alternative

Key Features:

  • Higher impact resistance than glass
  • Gloss finish suitable for a range of applications
  • UV resistant
  • Highly durable
  • Should not be used directly behind a heat source
  • Sheet manufacturing process: Extruded
  • Supplied with protective film on both sides

Besides its high resilience to trauma, it is also UV resistant and has a 15 to 20-year lifespan outside, especially with minimal protection from the elements.

Extruded acrylic has a bright finish and a consistent thickness, making it ideal for customizing and personalized fabrication. A solvent-based adhesive formulated for this application can bond well with it as well.

It is much easier to mould and reshape extruded acrylic than cast acrylic since its forming temperature is lower. Standard power tools can efficiently cut and drill the material, but caution must be taken to avoid crushing it to the point where it splits.

Coloured acrylic quickly replaces expensive glass as the material of choice for kitchen splashbacks, as it is suitable for many applications. Any kitchen will look great with our extensive colour palette.

Acrylic sheets also have the following characteristics:

  • Glass is half its weight
  • Sunlight and salt spray are not a problem
  • Temperature range of -30°F to 160°F for continuous operation
  • Good outdoor weather.
  • Easy and cost-effective fabrication
  • Fully recyclable
  • Excellent surface hardness and durability
  • Superb chemical resistance – better than most plastics
  • Food safe
  • Easy to clean and maintain

Acrylic is also known by the trade names Perspex®, Lucite, Altuglas and Plexiglass.

Acrylic Vs Perspex

Acrylic Vs Perspex

While acrylic and Perspex Polycarbonate are often viewed as direct competitors, they have a lot in common at face value and sometimes bump into each other when performing the same tasks. At a glimpse, you may not be able to distinguish between the two, so how can you pick between them? As their actual properties are quite different, it is not better, but rather which is most suitable for your purposes.

Damage resistance:

Plastics, such as acrylic and Polycarbonate, have impressive resistance levels to strong impacts and can hold their own against the most of alternative materials. Often a comparison is made between them and glass, which always comes out as the clear loser.

Both plastics are very resistant to damage and will easily resist a blow that would have reduced a pane of glass to thousands of shards. Nevertheless, Polycarbonate’s impact resistance consistently beats glass’, as it consistently outperforms both of them. Depending on how it is constructed, acrylic can exhibit anywhere between 10-30 times the resistance of glass but will normally fall short of the strength demonstrated by Polycarbonate.

Colours:

Polycarbonate, on the other hand, offers a far more limited selection of colours than acrylic. Most standard colours are available, however.

Unlike acrylic, though, the colour clarity of Polycarbonate does diminish over time and will assume a yellow hue with continued exposure to UV rays.

Cleaning:

Their resistance to powerful knocks, while effective, does not translate to their ability to resist scratches, and both (particularly Polycarbonate) will submit to scratches, suggesting acrylic should avoid abrasive cleaning solvents and harsh sponges or scourers.

Both are easily cleaned with normal soap and water. Still, acrylic is less repellent to harsh chemicals than Polycarbonate and should not ever be cleaned with glass detergents or ammonia-based sprays.

Polycarbonate can endure the rigours of these types of cleansers and is, therefore, less likely to be damaged while being maintained, but once the damage has been inflicted, it is not easily fixed. Acrylic, however, can recover from minor injuries, such as light scratches at next to no expense and even less difficulty.

Transparency:

Acrylic is marginally more transparent than Polycarbonate, and the difference is negligible, but the gap will widen if Polycarbonate is allowed to yellow due to sun exposure.

Additionally, both will lose visual clarity over time, the difference being that acrylic must be polished to restore it; Polycarbonate cannot.

Cost:

Polycarbonate can be anywhere from 35% to 300% more costly than acrylic.

Workability:

When forming acrylic and polycarbonate sheets, acrylic is more manageable and can be cut more efficiently and with noticeably less opposition, mainly when using electrical tools.

In contrast, Polycarbonate excels in drilling since it can be drilled anywhere on the sheet without causing damage 99% of the time. Acrylic will stand drilling but grows more and more likely to break the closer you drill to the corners.

Coronavirus and plastic protecting screens

Coronavirus and plastic protecting screens: all you need to know

You can see it in nearly all supermarkets at the moment: see-through perspex screens that are hung from the ceiling to create a barrier between customers and cashiers. Why are sneeze screens so powerful against the spread of coronavirus, and for what situations are these plastic protective cough screens most appropriate? In this blog, we describe the many types of counter screens and how they can be utilised.

Plastic shielding at the checkout

With Covid-19 growing rapidly, it’s now more relevant than it’s ever been for businesses to guarantee that the workplace is as secure and hygienic as viable, both for employees and for members of the public. The government recommendation is to stay 2 metres distant is proving quite challenging in practice. Prime cases are at supermarket checkouts, collection points, pharmacies, bakeries and greengrocers, where people are continually going in and out. To check the spread of the disease, we have developed various types of plastic protective screens constructed from transparent acrylic sheets, sometimes known as Plexiglass, polymethyl methacrylate and Perspex.

Why does acrylic sheets protect against coronavirus?

As you presumably know already, the coronavirus is spread mainly through droplets in the air from sneezes and coughs. A sneeze screen placed in front of a cash register or counter serves as a barrier to these airborne droplets and shields cashiers, pharmacists and receptionists, amongst others. These shop counter screens assist in separating uninfected people from those who may already have the disease. Our standing transparent stand screens are created with a cutout at the foot so that pharmacists and other retailers can transfer over a prescription or purchased product, for example.

Types of plastic protective screens

We offer two types of cough screen in our range, also referred to in the business as plastic money register screen, perspex table screen, sneeze screen stand, plastic screen for a cash register or perspex Covid-19 screen. We offer two standing alternatives in various sizes. The smaller stand or counter screen has one cutout and measures 60 cm wide x 80 cm high, so it’s perfect for shops with a tiny counter and just one cash ledger. The larger sneeze screen with pair cutouts is helpful in spaces with larger counter space. For example, one opening can be used for the ATM and the other for pushing through the product purchased. With pedestals combined, you can place your new coronavirus plastic shielding in no time.

Artists or painters use acrylic sheets as a canvas because its way better and solid, our customers ask us if painting on acrylic sheet can be done.

Painting on acrylic sheet is achievable but there are some paints which are best to use on these materials, in this blog acrylicsheetcuttosize will cover few of the options and important tips.

Solvents on acrylic sheet

There are types of acrylic sheets which we have discussed on our previous blog and this.

Solvents shouldn’t be used on plexiglass or acrylic sheet because it can make the painted area sloppy and deformed. Water paints are very good choice to use.

Covering, painting, spurting and finishing

For painters, there is always a need to cover the sides to bring a canvas look to the acrylic sheet. Secondary Glazing of Home Windows

Secondary Glazing of Home Windows

When it comes to sound proofing or insulating a room, secondary glazing the windows is the way to go.

For some of the design of the windows replacing them with double glazing becomes hard. In that case we can use acrylic for secondary glazing to complete the task.

Acrylic sheets can easily be used to save an existing window and provide sound and thermal protection.

Due to its availability online and also on stores, one can get a wide variety of acrylic sheet easily.

Extruded or cast acrylic secondary glazing?

Sometime its not a possibility to replace the whole window due to its aesthetics, shape or design.

A secondary window made out of acrylic is the best option which is cost effective and gets the work done.

Although in terms of quality acrylic sheets also comes in different variant of products. Two major type of acrylic are Extruded or cast acrylic. Cast acrylic is of higher quality and is more durable, Extruded acrylic is much cheaper but has its own advantages and disadvantages.

It is cheaper due to its production process; more acrylic sheets result from the same amount of raw material. The rolling process increases the internal tensions of the acrylic sheets, leaving them more prone to breaking that cast acrylic. Cast acrylic is poured into a moulded during production, which creates a sheet with almost no internal tensions.

We at acrylicsheetcuttosize recommend choosing a cast acrylic sheet when you are planning to make your secondary glazing.

For secondary glazing the best choice is clear acrylic. Acrylic sheets come in other shades and finishes, like frost or tinted acrylic.

Which are useful for creating a sunblock or a privacy screen. Acrylic can easily be ordered in our website. We recommend using a sheet that is at least 4 millimeters. know that acrylic can expand due to temperature change.

If you are plan on placing the secondary glazing inside the window frame, choose a sheet that is 5 mm less wide and 5 mm less high. With the correct installation

Secondary Glazing of Home Windows
method, the sheet will stay right in its spot and have the necessary room to expand.

Installing secondary glazing

You can install the secondary glazing to a window in two ways.
1. On the inside of the window frame

  1. Against the windows frame

When placing against the window frame. It is much easier to mount or dismount the window, which makes it a good choice for temporary or seasonal purpose.

While on the other hand installing it on the inside of the window frame requires lot more work, like glazing beads with foam tape to deal with the expansion due to temperature changes.

Acrylic Nameplate

Acrylic nameplate

Due to its durability and sturdy nature, acrylic sheets can be used in many numerous ways. Name plates in general are very easy to make and assemble. It can be a good DIY project and can be made with minimal effort.

Things you will need to make a nameplate

For cutting of acrylic sheet you would need a Jigsaw and for making holes to hang your nameplate you would require a variable speed drill. These are the only electrical tool you would need in this project. HSS drill is good for drilling holes in acrylic sheet, the cutting can be done with a fine-toothed saw for soft metals, such as aluminum.

You would require a roll of masking tape for making the marks for sawing and drilling. When sawing it is very important to keep the edges neat, this can be done with the help of sandpaper grit 120-240.

Then for your name, you have the option to paint or engrave the lettering. For painting you can use acrylic paint and a brush. For engraving, you can use Dremel and an engraving drill. You would need a non-erasable marker or fineliner for marking out the letters.

Lettering and engraving the acrylic sheet:

To begin the real craftsmanship: marking the lettering. For lettering, regardless of whether you are going to paint or engrave, it should be at the back of the sheet. That means that you will have to work in mirror image later on. This is easier if you have a good template or you can get many templates online as well. You can simply mark the lettering on the foil on the front and print out your design. After that place it under the nameplate, and mark it on the front.

To start the engraving process of the sheet, after you have marked out your design at the back. Turn the acrylic sheet and remove the foil at the back. As precaution while engraving fine dust and high frequency sound is produced, so its good to use earplugs and a respirator that you can get from a general store.

The engraving can be started with the outline of your design and letters, use engraving bit with a convex head of 1 to 2 millimeters wide. Don’t try to engrave in a hurry as the acrylic starts melting during machining. You will need to maintain low to moderate speed to keep the acrylic from melting or sticking to the machine. Practicing a little on a spare sheet before moving to real nameplate is always a good choice.

CLEANING POLYCARBONATE SHEET

CLEANING POLYCARBONATE SHEET

How to Clean and Take Care of Polycarbonate sheet

You have just bought a piece of polycarbonate sheet from our store, we sell a variety of thickness from 2mm to 10 mm. We at acrylicsheetcuttosize would like to give these golden rules of wisdom to help you get the most value out of your product. Your satisfaction is our number one priority.

The first Problem with cleaning and caring for polycarbonate sheet is the use of incorrect cleaners. It should be kept in mind never to use cleaners containing ammonia as they could do more harm than clean. Beware of using the cleaners such as Windex or 409 these will harm your newly bought polycarbonate.

It is always better to do a little research beforehand when taking the task of cleaning a product that’s new, you would see that products which are specifically recommended for cleaning polycarbonate are Novus #1, or Brillianize, and a soft cloth. Which can be easily bought online or from retail shops.

Never use a dry cloth or your hand to clean your polycarbonate. By doing this the small particles of dust end up damaging the polycarbonate due to the friction.

When cleaning try to blow the dust or dirt off or use water and a soft cloth to float the dirt off. After that is done you can use a recommended cleaner to complete the cleaning. Also keep in mind that, a mild solution of dish detergent and warm water takes off stubborn dirt easily without doing any damage to the polycarbonate if you’ve run out of Novus #1 or Brillianize. If you don’t have the cleaning product then use water and a soft cloth.

The second Problem with polycarbonate is Sunlight.

While Plexiglass is NOT affected by the sun, polycarbonate is. Untreated or standard general-purpose polycarbonate is good for 5-7 years in the direct sun before it starts to haze and discolor a bit. It does not lose its strength but is less transparent. Products in the polycarbonate which are produced with a protective layer will not change much even in 15 years. Your headlight covers that discolor are also made of polycarbonate and a little buffing keeps them as new as they were the first day.

Removing Scratches from polycarbonate

Normal light scratches can be removed with a mild abrasive polish such as Novus#2 or Novus #3. Fine scratches cannot be removed with a mild abrasive polish such as Novus #2, or Novus #3. While the material looks similar to Plexiglas, it is made of carbon, not methyl methacrylate. 2 very different compounds. We Want You to Be Satisfied. We have offered these basic rules to guide you to years of satisfaction. If you experience any problems with your polycarbonate, have questions regarding cutting, drilling, buffing or are curious as to new materials available, please call or email us.

Acrylic comparison with Glass

Acrylic comparison with glass

Acrylic and glass in comparison are two different products. Due to its higher labor cost and a tedious process to make glass more resistant to breakage it becomes extremely costly. This is not good as compared to consumer market that demands cheaper products with higher quality and availability.

Acrylic sheet plastics cut to size | Acrylic comparison with Glass

When compared with Acrylic products glass is a very costly product and a lower life span. When a product is made in higher quantity the cost of production goes lower and with demand profit margins are lowered so that the consumer can choose that product.

Acrylic is very cost effective, because of lower labor work and easier to make as compared to glass. There are some major differences in between these products which makes one better than the other.

Weight Comparison

Acrylic is 50% lighter than Glass.

Impact resistance

Acrylic is 10-20 times stronger than glass, which make it more resistant to impact. When acrylic shatter in comparison to glass, it is in larger pieces as compared to glass which breaks into smaller pieces. Due to its lower weight it is much easier to work with.

Insulation

Acrylic insulates better than glass. It is much widely used in skylights, doors and divisions.

Manufacturing

Molding and extrusion of glass items are more expensive and requires much more energy.

Machining

Glass cannot be easily processed by sawing, milling and bending. It is a lot more difficult to change the shape of glass as compared to acrylic.

Scratch resistance

Glass is harder to scratch. Acrylic sheets can be supplied with a scratch-resistant coating (hard coating) which provides extra protection. While scratch-resistant acrylic is not nearly as scratch-resistant as glass. Small scratches in acrylic can be polished. Scratched glass must be replaced.

Light transmittance

Glass has 90% light transmission, for acrylic it is 92%. A small difference but its good to know that you can get better light transmittance for half the cost.

Gloss

Acrylic provides a softer reflection of light. It is very hard to know which one is which when compared side by side. Its nature to be mouldeded into higher quality gives acrylic much more variety as compared to glass.

UV light

Standard acrylic sheets allow UV light to pass. Glass however blocks the UV light. Acrylic sheets can also be delivered with a UV filter and still cost less than a standard glass.
